Students at QAE: explore learning sites on the Internet, create electronic portfolios for others to seem them as writers and artists, place book holds and make book recommendations using Destiny, communicate on shared documents using Google Drive, create projects using Voice Thread and Glogster which have the ability for others to comment. These are all tools that are considered "social media" tools.

Internet safety, cyber bullying, privacy, and copyright are all apart of being a positive digital citizens. With all students, these subjects are being discussed, practiced and reviewed. Please visit the Digital Citizenship page to see the areas being discussed and sites used for enrichment.

It's a different world. We can run but we can't hide. Let's keep everyone safe!

Getting ready for the holidays (can't believe it myself)? Please think about spreading cheer at the QAE book fair starting this Wednesday. Santoro's Books will host our fair again because last year's fair was so amazing, putting many new books into the classroom. Owner, Carol Santoro will be bringing 13 tables of the hottest titles! Teachers will have their wish lists posted for those interested.

Students will be visiting the book fair on Wednesday to make their wish list and then returning a second time to make make any purchases. Look for those wish lists! If you have a suggestion on titles you'd like to see at the book fair, . The book fair is open each day from 8:45-4:15, Carol will stay open until 6:00 on Friday. Carol is also giving everyone 25% coupons for later purchases in her store.

Love Book Fairs  - getting young readers excited about new books!

Do you know about The Source? Here you can see your child's attendance, state assessment scores, learning plans, library checkout history and other great information.

Click on The Source at the top of the Seattle Public Schools website and then Click on Begin Registration. Make sure you have the following before starting the process:

  • Your student's full name
  • Your student's ID# (found on your student's ASB card)
  • School your student attends
  • Your student's date of birth

Many parents have been asking me  - How do I know what books my child has checked out? How can I see my child's assessment scores? Here's your solution!

Have a great weekend!

It always amazes, delights and encourages me how much readers love a good series - even when the series never ends! While it can be frustrating for some parents when readers won't give up on a series (gotta love those Rainbow Magic fairies!) and explore new titles, I believe it's the start down a good path building a huge love of reading. Completing a series is celebrated in the library!!

To support students in managing the books in the series, I've created series check lists. When a student begins a series, I encourage them to download the checklist, circle the titles they read, and then bring the completed check list (signed by a parent so they can be celebrated at home) for me to see. Along with my excitement they are given a current Scholastic Book Order for them to choose any book ($4.50 or less). Some students are choosing the next book in a series they are reading that is not available in the QAE library - a very good thing!

If you're building your child's library and looking for a great selection of beginning readers or looking for new software I would highly recommend browsing Scholastic's offerings. Delivery is quick at no-charge, no tax and best of all earns the school points to be used to by MORE BOOKS! Below is the link to the Scholastic catalogs we subscribe to:     www.scholastic.com/bookclubs
  • Honeybee (Toddlers to Fours)
  • Firefly (PreK)
  • See Saw (K-1)
  • Lucky (Grades 2-3)
  • Arrow (Grades 4,5,6)
  • Specialty catalogs - Teacher Picks, Math and Science, Dear Diary, Authors and Illustrators
When ordering use the activation code: JNB2V  When the books arrive they will be deliver to your child's classroom. I have a small supply of the thin papered catalogs that we once received in school. Just stop by or ask your child to pick up in the library.

I remember browsing the Scholastic Catalog when I was in school - I'd first circle my choices and then negotiate with my parents on getting them! Check out Scholastic - they often times have books you can't find anywhere.

Keyboarding Games
Proper keyboarding is a 21st Century skill and essential for all students. QAE students are beginning good keyboarding habits. They're on the way to being solid keyboarders by practicing their skills using a program called Type to Learn Jr (TTLjr) and Type To Learn 4 (TTL4).  TTL4 begins each student at the basic foundation of keyboarding (Recruit): hand positioning, posture, and home row keys. The program allows each user to save the world through proper keyboarding and accuracy! TTLjr enters the student into the learning center and introduces them to all the letters on the keyboard and which hand should type which letters.

For primary students the goal is letter recognition on the keyboard and practice finding letters and symbols. A "Keyboarding" page has been created using resources from my favorite, tried and true, websites that make keyboarding fun - total family fun! Intermediate students have a great times using many of these resources as well.

Both programs are available for home installation. Please if you'd like to check out a CD, install at home and support your child with keyboarding practice fun!

Happy Keyboarding!
Mr.  Jeffrey

Bringing books alive while reading aloud is gift we can give all listeners! It's the hook that brings our children closer to being life long readers. Changing your voice and tone to match your image of the character makes a story rich with enjoyment. My mentor, inspiration and virtual friend since my career began, 20 years ago, is the great Mex Fox. Through her examples and theory my skills continue to improve. In the library, I strive at reading every story with excitement and gusto!

Check out Mom Fox's  - And Do it Like This. Here you will get insights and examples on how improve or confirm your reading aloud talents!

I enjoyed seeing many of you at Open House last night. This was my first open house where I was daddy first then QAE librarian. Kinda cool - loving having my daughter here at the greatest school in the world!

Happy Weekend!
