We're almost there, but not quite...  (read previous blog post)

We have another day to make the $350.  goal and earn the library program 6000 points, which will provide students free books as reading incentives.  Would you consider placing a small order with Scholastic using the activation code - JNB2V?

This month, more students are checking out different titles, exploring new series and trying, for a change, non-fiction books. The QAE library program is rewarding students with a new book when they finish a series and/or add ten books to their virtual bookshelf. Last month we gave away 17 new books, and I know of many students getting ready to finish another series in June. Whether it's listening to book talks, author interviews, or student book recommendations - STUDENTS ARE CHECKING OUT MORE BOOKS!

I need your support so that I can continue giving away new books. For the month of May, Scholastic is offering teachers 6000 points with only a combined purchased of $350. I've never seen a points reward this high. I came to Queen Anne Elementary with my 12K points, collected over the past 17 years of teaching. I am using those points to buy books as rewards. Single books usually range around 100-200 points. I'd like to build my points bank so that the library program can continue rewarding students new books. Can you consider buying $10 worth of books?

Click here to check out all the grade level catalogs and some of my recommendations for summer reading. Use the activation code  JNB2V when ordering. I am thinking can get to $350 with no problem and earn an additional 6000 points. Scholastic is also giving parents who spend $10 a $3.00 off certificate. No Shipping, No Tax. Simple.

Have a great holiday weekend!

Librarians of the Day
Today, the library was assisted by Jack and Burak. They worked hard learning the duties of the librarian; we then enjoyed lunch together and will finish the day with a visit to the Queen Anne bookstore! Huge fun!

MAP Schedule
Three times this year our students will be given the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment. For the next two weeks it's round three for all students! Click here for past MAP information.

To support your child being more comfortable and less stressed when taking the assessment, it's encouraged that you have a conversation about the assessment and provide practice. Clicking here will give K-2 students an opportunity to see what the testing experience will look like and give them a chance to practice using the computer. Students in grades 3-5 will be given a non-audio version.

Practice assessment for the MAP in primary grades.

Click here for the MAP Assessment Schedule

Feel free to stop by any time to talk about MAP or see it in action.

The fifth graders have successfully completed the Mathematics and Reading parts of the MSP. Click here for a printed copy of the previous blog post that gives more information about the MSP. The third and fourth graders will also be assessed using the online MSP assessment.

It is highly recommended that each family downloads the practice MSP. (Click here to to select either Mac or Window demo). This demo will give your child more opportunities to practice using the online tools. More important, it gives you a taste of what your child we be experiencing during the assessment.

PLEASE send your child to school with a water bottle, so he/she can stay hydrated during the assessment. Please if you have any questions or concerns about the MSP.

Diane Sawyer wanted a school in Seattle to read "Where the Wild Things Are" in honor of Maurice Sendack, who passed away on Monday. Lucky us, the west coast ABC producers picked Queen Anne Elementary. Click here to hear watch the report with Diane Sawyer. A huge shout-out to Laila and Beren for their creative reading of an amazing story!"Let the wild rumpus start!" - Mr. Sendack - forever remembered!

MSP Testing Schedule
This year the state administration of the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) is available on line.  Our school has decided to test grades 3-5/Math, Science (only 5th), Reading) online.  The test questions are the same as paper/pencil version, but shown in different order on each computer screen for test security.  Students will have the same amount of time to take the test as before and there are tools built into the presentation for students to use.  The test window is extended for the online version to allow all students time in the computer lab.  The writing test will continue to be paper/pencil due to the volume of handwritten response.   Your child’s teacher will be sending home notification of specific dates for online tests that we are involved in this year.  We want our students to be well prepared and comfortable with the online format as this moves forward.

Please ensure your child is rested, has a good breakfast and comes to school ready to focus on the MSP.  If you would like to view a demonstration of this test and also take a sample test with test questions in the different subjects and grades please go to OSPI’s link: http://www.k12.wa.us/Assessment/StateTesting/OnlineTesting.aspx  The box on the right has the downloads for you to view.

All students will have the opportunity to see both the DEMO and the Online Training Tools (Sample test) at school.  Viewing it at home, with parents, is encouraged as well. Thank you for your support in helping to make this a successful experience for our students. All testing begins at 9:45.

On the library page, rollover with your mouse "Classrooms" in the navigation bar and visit the three kindergarten classrooms. Check out the discoveries that our kindergartners made about Peru, India and Japan. These extraordinary writers and artists have created amazing pages filled with cool country facts. Feel free to leave a comment with your WOWS and WONDERS! Everyone needs a little encouragement; it's the water that makes the seeds grow.
